This my be a topic for misc. topics, but I'm going to let the train leave on this thread out the station.

What is it that when a good concept of a reality based show on people an their hobbies goes from going to be a great show, to something that get corupted an fictionalized to the point that it's no longer about the subject that it was about, it becomes the moment of either the "Jump the shark" or " okay now it has has to be staged.
Many of the shows even seem to be getting more about the contrived drama, then what the focus of the show was about.
I cant blame the concept of the show, I blame the fame of the people they are following. It starts out with cameras in the shop, it turns into I need to perform because I am in front of a camera.
I dont watch any other kind of reality show, its a cheap way to air programs with no payment to actual actors.
I think thats why one of my favorite shows on tv is Wipeout, because 24 people who want their 15 minutes of fame all get punched in the face the first time they run next to the wall.

You've both hit the nail right smack dab in the middle of the head!! There "ain't" no such thing as reality anymore. Well, maybe Mike Holmes and a few others...
I think they chose to jump the shark or begin to stage things because it extends the longevity of the shows. Could American Choppers, as it was before the Junior/Senior blowout and seperation, have lasted 10 years on the air if it was just a father-son shop turning out custom choppers without the drama? Over 200 shows worth? Same with all the other "reality shows". They may start in reality, but because they are so much cheaper to air and produce than a "scripted" program, higher ups start interfering to up the drama factor to keep the viewers coming back.
I had many periods when I wasn't watching Junior vs Senior because the staged stuff was getting out of hand. I stopped watching Deadliest Catch during Season 7 because I could not take one more minute of the contrived, dramatic bull****, not to mention the drama llamaism that was being encouraged by the presence of the cameras. Yet a lot of viewers ate it up. Went back to viewing in Season 7 when they dialed it down. Still, how long will that show be able to last showing crab pots coming up the sides of the ships, no matter how compelling some of the personalities are? Personally, what hooked me on AC and DC was the focus on small businesses and the kinds of guts and brains it takes to keep them going. Sure, I love the finished choppers and the Bering Sea is always good for a few lessons, but when they take them out of the kingdoms they built with their bodies and brains and make them "Hollywood", it bastardizes them.
